Fusible beads, also known as Perler beads (the brand name) were a popular craft in our home a couple years ago. The kids were not as interested in them until recently. Since we have been spending a lot of time at home (like all the time) it has been fun tapping into crafts that we have not used for a long time. The kids have loved looking online for various Disney or Nintendo character patterns to create! We were even able to create a pattern depicting The Child using Perler Beads.
If you search online for Perler bead patterns for any character, you will find many choices. We would lean towards the less detailed ones so the kids could create them all on their own. There is a popular site that you will see pop up often, but the advertisements were not child appropriate. Parent hack: I saved the images to my phone or tablet and had the kids use the photo as their guide. That way I wasn’t worried about the ads.
The Child Perler Bead Pattern
My little guy wanted to make The Child from the popular Disney+ Series, Mandolorian. We could not find an easy pattern for the kids to follow online so we made our own. This would look better with different shades of Perler beads (like a bluish green and a blush pink) but we wanted to use what we had at home. As Mando says, “This is the way.” Even with the different shades, the kids loved our version of The Child!

- We have the variety tub and I use a plastic bin to pour them out into. This allows the kids to grab what they need more easily.
- I like how the newer sets are divided by color. Saves a lot of time and makes it easy to grab colors needed.
- Clear square pegboard. Some designs can be printed and lined up behind the board to help guide pattern making.
- Individual color packs– these are a must if you are making designs that require a specific color.
- A friend recommended the SmART Pixelator which is a cool way to make 2D and 3D designs (including your own pictures you upload!). I haven’t tried it, but she recommended this with the extra sequins and beads (this will probably be a gift for Easter).
My husband and I are loving how this craft has kept the kids busy and their minds creative. Also, these Perler bead creations can easily be made into key chains or coasters! I hope your family has fun making The Child Perler bead pattern too!
