When you have a child who is constantly trying to climb the walls, eventually you learn to roll with it! That’s exactly what we did by creating a Star Wars climbing wall for my son’s room. Bubba’s DIY Star Wars themed room is pretty cool. Even the adult Star Wars fan in the house, my husband, has mentioned that his childhood self is a bit envious. A couple years back I shared this post about his Star Wars DIY costume station. While he still uses that station, he needed something to help get some of the extra energy out.

My husband and I checked Pinterest for various wall climbing ideas. We ended up deciding that the best way would be to attach 24 x 24 inch wood panels (purchased from Home Depot already cut) to the wall and adding the plastic climbing rocks to the panels.
- We rounded the corners by sanding them down for a smoother (and safer) finish.
- This Star Wars peel and stick wallpaper was attached to each panel.
- To attach the panels to the wall, we drilled four 3-inch screws into the panel and into the studs of the wall.
- I purchased these climbing “stones” and then used black spray paint that is intended for plastic. Looking back, I would have kept them their original color or tried to find monochromatic ones because the paint rubs off.
- We substituted M8-1.25 x 3omm socket headcap for the screws that came with the climbers. This was because the original screws were too long and would have gone through the sheetrock.
- The climbers were screwed on randomly; four per panel.
- My husband and I tested the Star Wars climbing wall for weight (ok mostly for fun!)
Star Wars Basketball Hoop
After the Star Wars climbing wall was complete, I felt like it was still missing something. So I set off to find a basketball hoop that I could add a Star Wars flair to. This hoop is the perfect size and a little spray paint gave it a monochromatic look. There are many black and white options online if you aren’t in a rush and don’t want to paint! Then we needed a basketball that would be fitting for the Star Wars room. So of course it needed to look like the Death Star! I used a plastic bonding acrylic paint in gray and black paint marker. This is where it can get sticky (literally!) The ball should dry for a few days before you let a young Padawan play with it…otherwise the paint rubs off a bit.
The scoreboard was made using scrap wood and my Cricut to cut out the stencil. The numbers all mean something in the Star Wars movies. Did you pick up on any of them? Don’t worry if you can’t…I couldn’t without searching the web!
