DIY Rainbow Wooden Bead Garland

This DIY rainbow wooden bead garland is an easy way to use up that tie dye you probably have left over from summer crafts! When we were updating my daughter’s room her only request was for lots of color, which was a fun stretch for me since I usually stay in the safe black and white décor scheme. I had a bunch of wooden beads left over from a Christmas project that we wanted to paint with bright colors. We were going to use acrylic paint but a friend had sent over a blogpost by Kailochic where she used tie dye on wooden blocks to create a rainbow wooden tumbling game. So we decided to put that method to the test with our round beads.

In order to make your own rainbow wooden garland you need:

• Round wooden beads
• Square wooden beads (optional)
• Tie Dye Kit (you can purchase this party pack or this smaller one—we barely used the party pack but Tie Dye has been a hit here all summer and I feel like my kids will still get use out of the set)
• Jute twine

Start by putting down plastic to protect your countertops and grab some gloves to protect your hands. Then grab cups and put a bead at the bottom of each cup. Using the tie dye squirt bottle, cover your bead with your desired color and swish the bead around. I let the bead soak in the color for a little bit (3-5 minutes) and then took them out with tongs. Plastic wrap was where the beads dried. Don’t be alarmed if the beads come out looking too dark or muted…they dry to a vibrant shade. You can also play with the hue by mixing colors or adding more/less water to the bottles. This project was so easy that the kids were able to do it themselves during their breaks from distance learning.

 

Once the beads were completely dry (6 hours), the kids used jute twine to string the beads. I helped them make a tassel from the same twine.
