Phonics: Plastic Eggs Matching Game

shahla · March 1, 2019 · 10 Comments

What do you do with those plastic Easter eggs when the egg hunt is over? I have been trying to save ours and reuse them. My husband will question about the necessity of saving them since they are so inexpensive to buy again. While I agree space is valuable and they are so cheap to but every year…I am trying to decrease the amount of plastic we throw in the trash.

This year I wanted to find a way to incorporate them into learning activities for the kids. We have been working on phonics with my four year old for awhile now. He goes to preschool three days a week and durning his two days off, I like to do a learning activity with him. There are so many great ideas on Pinterest (matching upper and lowercase letters, etc.) for up-cycling plastic eggs. I was looking for something that would challenge my son a bit more.

I decided I wanted to have him pair up letters with corresponding pictures. You may have stickers at home that you can use…I did not so I searched online to find ones that would fit onto the smaller eggs. I ended up finding an alphabet sticker workbook from Amazon (it was under $4). You can find it here (affiliate link, which means I make a commission at no additional cost to you). Since the eggs are curved and the stickers are larger, I ended up securing them with packing tape. I mixed up the colors to make it more challenging. The letters were drawn on with black permanent marker. I chose lowercase letters since that is what his teacher focuses on with them.

This activity keeps him busy and helps him recognize his letter sounds faster. It has helped his reading which is a big win over here.

What do you do with your left over plastic eggs after Easter?

With love,

Shahla

This is such a good idea! Not only reusing plastic but making learning fun. I will try it this Easter with my toddler.
