These macrame ornaments are the right mixture of boho-meets modern-meets cozy! Last year, I purchased a bunch of these clear globe ornaments on clearance after Christmas. I had envisioned a modern tree filled with clear globes and disco balls. We have one tree that was more rustic by the fireplace and one tree that we put all of our special ornaments the kids make. My husband and kids decided that they are attached to our rustic family room tree as it is and I couldn’t convince them to go along with my vision. Majority ruled and I had a bunch of clear ornaments on my hands. While looking for inspiration, I came across Aniko’s painted macrame ornaments on Place of My Taste . She makes so many gorgeous ornaments! I wanted to try to macrame the clear globes I had and add a snowy cozy feel to the ornaments. In my mind I was dreaming up a very Anthropologie feel when making these macrame ornaments.

If you are intimidated by macrame and getting the square knots perfect, I get it! I am horribly coordinated with braiding hair and was very intimidated by macrame. And if you have no idea what a square knot is– we got this! It took completing a couple ornaments until I felt it became easier. The hardest part is that the ornaments roll around, so you will want something that can cradle them while you tie knots. That will make it much easier. As long as you have yarn, you can use whatever ornaments you have and update them with macrame. Since I had all these clear globes, I knew they were perfect for the macrame ornaments. I also had a bit of fake snow and bottle brush trees that I added into the globes to make them even more whimsical!
Here is what you need to make macrame ornaments:
- Round/globe ornaments (I used two different sizes 3 inch and 4 inch)
- Yarn
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Glue gun (optional to glue the top of the yarn to the ornament, otherwise you can cut the excess off)
Here are the steps to making the macrame ornaments (I try to explain the knots below, but I highly recommend watching a video tutorial online if you are unfamiliar with the basic knots):
- Measure and cut 10 pieces of yarn depending on the size of your globe. For my standard sized ornaments, I measured each piece to be 24 inches.
- Measure and cut a piece of yarn to be about 10 inches.
- Take each of your longer pieces and tie them onto the shorter piece using a Lark’s Head Knot. (You fold your yarn in half creating a loop at the top. Then you stick the loop under the shorter yarn and pull the bottom through the loop creating a knot)
- Once all the longer pieces are tied onto the shorter piece of yarn, you will tie the shorter piece together around the top of the ornament. Either use a glue gun to attach the yarn to the top of the ornament or cut off the excess.
- Start by gathering two sets of tied yarn and creating a square knot (again, check out youtube as I don’t want to intimidate you with my explanation). Do this until you have made 5 knots and then start another row. I typically had 3 rows of square knots for my macrame ornaments.
- Gather all of the yarn and tie together with a scrap piece of yarn. Wrap the yarn around the bottom to create a tasseled look. Blunt cut the yarn. And that’s it!
I filled our macrame ornaments with snowflakes and glued down a few bottle brush trees (use a glue gun and long tweezers). Also, if square knots have you stressed just tie the yarn pieces at the bottom of the ornament and create a tassel. This looks just as elegant and cozy.
