Easy DIY Costumes

shahla · October 4, 2018 · Leave a Comment

If you are looking for easy DIY costumes using things you may have in your home already; I have got you covered! My kids usually change their minds multiple times before Halloween. I tend to wait until we get closer to commit to a costume. They also have been repurposing costumes with things they already have (huge in in the money saving department!). Here are a few of our favorite DIY costumes that are easy to throw together and require no sewing. This post contains affiliate links which means I get paid a commission at no additional charge to you.

Mom (or Dad) Costume

My daughter loves dressing up as a mom, because she says moms make all the rules and go to brunch. Full disclosure: I may go to brunch once every 5 months if that! Ha! We have an entire series on Instagram called #kidspretendingtobeadults. They have a lot of pictures as parents. My son also loves pretending to be a dad. It is the cutest when he wears his baby. Check out the pictures below.

Here is what we used:

  • sweats or yoga pants
  • mom bun
  • big glasses (if you really want to get into it put dark makeup under her eyes to make it look like circles #tiredasamother)
  • baby carrier  or this Disney print one
  • shopping cart

Voila! You have an instant mom or dad costume!

Mary Poppins

When we were going to Disneyland my daughter really wanted to dress up as Mary Poppins, but I could not find an inexpensive version of the Jolly Holiday scene dress. I ended up buying an inexpensive white dress from here and added the pops of red using ribbon and left over fabric. You can definitely use a white dress you already have.

You can tie little red bows and attach them with safety pins. The belt I made from scrap red fabric that I cut into her belt shape and glued on white ribbon. I then took an old easter hat and used white tulle to tie it on her head. We ended up purchasing this umbrella from here to complete the look. It isn’t the best quality umbrella but it was super inexpensive. She was stopped numerous times by Mary Poppins fans who loved her costume! The best part is that I can take all the ribbons off and she can wear the white dress for everyday occasions.

Serena Williams

My daughter loves tennis and her tennis coach calls her the “queen of tennis” since she has a natural flare for the dramatics (in a good way…she likes acting). It seemed fitting to have her dress up as Serena Williams. She had the black leotard that we ended up tucking a sleeve in. She also had the black tutu and tennis racket! Instant Serena! She wore it to her practice and I don’t think I have ever seen her so determined and focused! Maybe we wear tutus to tennis more often! Here is the link to her leotard.

Edna Mode

When we were putting together family costume ideas in May we considered being the Incredible family (from Disney’s Incredibles). My daughter was set on being Edna Mode. I let her style her own look. Since Edna is a fashion designer wearing lots of black seemed safe. She chose a black pleated skirt and leather jacket. We found these glasses and this wig (both inexpensive) and she had a blast telling us Edna’s signature quote: “No capes!” all afternoon! When she was in Disneyland she held a baby Jack Jack stuffed toy. It was darling! Oh and I could not resist adding the Edna selfie below, because it looked so Edna-like! Haha!

What are your kids dressing as for Halloween?

With love,

Shahla
