DIY Skull Piñata – Perfect for Halloween Treats

shahla · September 8, 2020 · 1 Comment

A DIY skull piñata is super easy to make (my eight year old made a candy corn version by herself!) and the perfect way to spread some Halloween magic to neighbors and friends. Halloween may look a little different this year, but it doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! We have been crafting and brainstorming lots of fun, creepy, cute ideas that we are excited to share with you! These DIY skull piñatas are the perfect size to fill up with some candy and trinkets. I even made a sugar skull for Dia de los Muertos inspired by Casa Artelexia.

What you will need

Cardboard boxes (like cracker and cereal boxes)

Crepe paper in white

Masking tape (or packing)

Black Cardstock

Paper

Scissors

Glue Gun

Pencil

Flowers and pink cardstock (optional, this is for the Day of the Dead sugar skulls)

Instructions

Draw the shape that you would like your pinata to take onto the inside of the cardboard. In this case we made a skull.

Cut out your shape twice (one for the front and one for the back of the skull pinata)

Cut another piece of cardboard. This piece should be long enough to wrap around the cutout shapes.

Start taping the longer piece to the skull cutout. Once it has gone almost the way around, leave an opening to put in your treats and toys. I used a glue gun to secure the pieces.

Repeat the same for bottom piece.

I used white paper to cover the skull piñata making it more uniform (and I didn’t have to worry about the cardboard peeking through)

Start fringing pieces of crepe paper and gluing them onto the skull. I started from the bottom up to allow for uniform placement. The fringe pieces were adhered with a light strip of hot glue from my glue gun (be careful not to burn yourself!)

Then cut out shapes to make the face on your skull piñata using your black cardstock. Glue these pieces on as desired.

Voila! Your skull piñata is complete! Feel free to decorate further with flowers and colored cardstock if you would like to create a sugar skull.

What do you think? Super duper easy right?!

With love,

Shahla
