DIY: Play Kitchen Remodel

When my daughter turned one she got an adorable play kitchen for her birthday. The kitchen was pink, her playroom was lavender…it worked out!

When her brother was born a few years later and started playing in the playroom, we made a few changes. First, we moved the playroom downstairs since that’s where I spend most of the day. Second, we changed the color scheme to a monochromatic look. While everything in the room was shades of black, white and gray…the pink kitchen stayed pink.

Fast forward to a couple months ago when we were having our kitchen cabinets painted. The nice gentlemen who were working on our house agreed to paint the kitchen with the left over paint. You can achieve the same look using a paint spray and chalk paint (since it doesn’t require a primer). When you are painting, it is easier to take apart the kitchen and spray the pieces. Also, I used marble print contact paper to give the counter tops a glam upgrade! It was easiest to measure out the area and then cut to fit using a blade. I made the mistake of not cutting straight (twice, I did this…eye roll!) and not having enough for the front to fold over. It isn’t totally noticeable so I didn’t mess with it. And honestly, I used all the roll already! Make sure to push out the air bubble with the edge of a credit card. Since there will be multiple holes for the sink and stove top, there are plenty of places to push the bubbles out towards.

After attaching the contact paper, I cut out the holes for the stovetop and sink. Then, I folded down the and attached the paper to the inside of the openings.

Next, I replaced the sink and burners.

I repurposed a chalkboard MDF (you can buy one from Home Depot for less than $10) as the “backsplash”. The basket is a HomeGoods find that works perfectly as the fruit/veggie basket (this helps with my sanity as the kids are more likely to pick up after themselves).

 

Even though it plays exactly the same as before, the kids play with this kitchen more since it looks like a new toy. I especially love when little man is a multi-tasking-daddy-in-training!

By the way, it took every ounce of self-restraint not to paint the fixtures and accents gold.
