DIY Headband and Accessory Holder

shahla · April 10, 2018 · 10 Comments

This post has been sponsored by Nickelodeon, the opinions expressed are my own.

My kids have been watching Sunny Day on Nickelodeon and I can’t say that I mind. The show is about talented 10-year-old Sunny Day, a master hairstylist and salon owner.  With her friends Rox and Blair and a can-do attitude, Sunny is ready to save the day – one hairdo at a time! It is her positive attitude and confidence in being herself that makes me a fan of this show as a parent. And I am happy to say that attitude is rubbing off on my kids! They watch Sunny Day weekdays on Nickelodeon.

My daughter, like many other six-year-old girls has many headbands and hair accessories. If I’m lucky, she will toss them in the drawer in her bathroom. However, they are usually strewn about in every corner of the house. We set off to make a DIY headband holder that could also house other hair accessories like barrettes and ties.

When we were looking online for some inspiration for our headband holder, we came across an idea to use a cardboard oatmeal box and use decoupage to cover it. It was a total DIY fail because the paper got very lumpy. Instead of stressing out (which honestly is what I was doing), my daughter said, “it’s still a sunny day and we aren’t giving up.” So we decided to change our approach. We used another oatmeal container and covered it with vinyl strips instead. Keep Smiling, Keep Styling!

One of the main reasons I like this DIY so much is because my daughter can do almost all of it. She loved making it so much she made a smaller version for her doll’s headbands.

Here are the supplies you need:

  • Cylinder shaped oatmeal container box
  • Roll of vinyl
  • Scissors or a paper cutter
  • Paint (for the lid…we ended up using a top from a ceramic canister that was cracked)
  • Small cupcake stand (optional)
  • Hot glue (optional)

First, we cut the vinyl into pieces that are 1.5” thick. Line up the vinyl to the top of the oatmeal canister and smoothed it down and under the container. While smoothing the vinyl, press out any bubbles that may form. Also place the vinyl on each other so there is a little overlapping. This way you don’t have any bare spots.

The bottom of the container won’t look perfect and that is okay since we are attaching it to the mini cake stand. I used hot glue to attach the cake stand to the bottom of the container. This is the only step that I did not feel comfortable letting my daughter do. Other than the hot glue a six-year-old can totally do this!

We had a ceramic canister that had a crack in it. The lid was still in perfect condition so I tried it out on top of our headband and accessory holder. It was a perfect fit!

I love that this easy DIY is going to help us corral all of her headbands and hair accessories! Definitely a mom-win! For more Sunny Day content and episodes check out nickjr.com/sunny-day

What a cute idea! I love that you craft with your daughter. When mine was younger we did a lot of that too. Now as a teenager it’s hard to get her to do much LOL
