DIY Gingerbread Gift Boxes

shahla · December 20, 2019 · 1 Comment

I love the look of Gingerbread houses and Christmas villages and wanted to incorporate them into our family room Christmas decor. I came upon this amazing blog post about DIY gingerbread gift boxes from The House That Lars built and I was inspired to create my own!

Originally, I was intimidated because I am not a very good artist. However, I have come to realize that it is the unique qualities and minor flaws that make these gingerbread gift boxes even more special because they are handmade.

Here is what I used (the following links are affiliate links which means I get a commission at no additional cost to you. Thanks for your support!!):

  • Glue gun
  • X–acto blade
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • water-based paint markers (I used both fine and medium point markers…medium saves a ton of time!)
  • cotton balls (for chimney smoke)
  • corrugated boxes
    • 4x4x4 (perfect for ornaments and gift cards)
    • 6x6x4 (great for mugs and small gifts)
    • 6x6x6 (we used this size for larger candles, video games, makeup sets)
    • 12x9x4 (perfect for scarves or a gift box like we made)
Cardboard gingerbread house gift box step by step
Decorate your gingerbread box with a white paint marker. You can use a ruler to keep everything symmetrical and even or freehand.

Decorating the box when flattened gives you more control to decorate.

Tape the bottom and use a glue gun to securely close the box.

Cut out the sizes on opposing box flaps to create triangles. Save one of the cuts to create your chimney.

Bend the other flaps a little to allow yourself to hot glue them onto the front and back on one side only.

Use binder clips to hold the cardboard that you glued together to ensure they stick.
Cardboard gingerbread house gift box step by step for the roof
Cut another box in 1/4’s. Use one of the quarters and measure in half . Slice along the measured half to allow you to fold and make the roof. I drew lines to help me with my roof shingles.
Draw on roof shingles. Glue roof using hot glue onto one side of the box to allow access to the gift.
Use one of the triangles you cut earlier and create a chimney. Embellish with a ribbon. and a piece of cotton ball for the chimney.

I tried to make these gingerbread gift boxes as reusable as possible. I added velcro to the side that was not glued to keep it closed and to help keep the box from being ruined when the recipient opens his or her gift. We also used paper shred to keep things from moving too much.

I love how these gingerbread gift boxes turned out and how they look under our tree!

Your gifts are too pretty to open! I love how these look and love the sentiment. It’s one thing to spread Holiday cheer, but the added touch of a hand-painted/decorated box is too sweet!
